Breast Feeding on Period

Question:

My baby is five weeks old. I've been exclusively breast feeding him about every two hours during the day and every three to four hours at night. I believe I just got my period back and since then he's been refusing the breast or he will feed for five minutes and fall asleep. Is there a correlation with that?

Answer:

It is common for breastmilk supply to dip when you have your period so it could be that baby is not getting what he wants and will nod off or seem disinterested.  You can pump a little beforehand to elicit your let down so there is more of an immediate gratification and you can also offer the breast earlier. Are you taking any medications like birth control as they can also affect supply. It is important to take the mini pill which is progestin only so as not to affect supply.
