Supply way down, even after Fenugreek

Question:

My daughter is 16 weeks old & when my supply started to drop I started taking Fenugreek 3pills, 3 times/day. That wasn't working so I started taking Gaia Lactation Support that I bought from Whole Foods because it was highly recommended by local midwives. But this attempt too has failed after a few weeks of giving it time to work & it's very important to me to continue breastfeeding my daughter! Any ideas?

Answer:

Marisa,

This can be really frustrating!  Is your baby eating solids yet? If so, baby may be filling up on solids and not nursing as much which can affect your milk supply.  We recommend nursing first and then offering solids to help with this situation. Otherwise, are you on any medications as some medicines like decongestants, birth control pills, some herbal supplements like St. John's Wort, can also affect milk supply. Things that can also affect milk supply would be if you are not stimulating your breasts when baby is not nursing. if you and  your baby are apart for any reason during a feeding, it is important to pump (by a pump or hand expression) to ensure your body is getting the signals it needs to keep making milk.   Have you spoken with the midwives who recommended that herbal supplement? It may be that the combination in that supplement are not the right combination for you.  I would recommend speaking directly with the midwives for an in person consultation to rule out anything including the above mentioned but also to ensure that baby's latch is correct for milk transfer.
