Increase Milk Supply

Question:

My daughter is 3 weeks old. I pump my breast every 3hrs. and get about 3oz for both breast. How can I increase the milk supply?

My friend could pump about 8 oz each time for both breast. What am I doing wrong?

Answer:

BowlChanika,

At three weeks your little one's stomach is only about the size of a small egg, and cannot hold very much milk. At this age pumping 3oz at each session is a good amount. As you little one gets older and starts to eat more, you will be able to pump more too. If you are exclusively pumping don't forget to get some skin to skin time in as well. Skin to skin contact with baby increases the hormones in your body that help with milk production as well as feelings of love and well being.

All the best,
