How can I keep my baby awake while breast feeding?

Question:

How can I keep my baby awake while breast feeding? She seems to fall asleep instantly

Answer:

Claire, if baby is falling asleep at the breast you can try stroking her face or cheek to gently rouse her. Also baby is likely warm and cozy when she dozes off. You can also remove her socks or her clothing to see if that wakes her up a little bit.  Some babies like to “dream feed”.  It looks like they are sleeping but they are heavily resting and still sucking and drinking at the same time.  Also you can try different positions. Sometimes if baby is more upright in a football hold they won't be as likely to doze off.
