Breastmilk - The Gift that Lasts a Lifetime

Mom breastfeeding baby

Congratulations on your pregnancy and for making it to the home stretch, also known as the third trimester!  With everything else that's on your mind, one of the decisions you may be weighing now is how you're going to feed your baby. You should know that breastmilk is made specifically for your baby. It contains the perfect balance of vitamins, proteins, fats, antibodies and nutrients to help your baby develop physically and neurologically. While breastmilk substitutes claim they have these components too, simply put, most of the mom-made ingredients in breastmilk can’t be replicated in a lab.  And while breastfeeding obviously benefits your baby, it’s good for you too!  It's so much more than just the act of feeding. Breastfeeding will also give you the chance to forge a special closeness and bond with your baby.

Is Breastfeeding Right for You?
Even knowing the multiple benefits of breastfeeding, you may still be wondering if breastfeeding is right for you. You may be worried about work, your busy schedule or the time it may take away from your other children. You may also be wondering whether you'll produce enough milk, or whether it will be painful. Breastfeeding does take a commitment in today’s hectic environment and may not always be easy, but it's always worth the effort.

As you prepare for your baby to come view our Get Ready Checklist to learn more about the things you may need, especially in the early weeks of breastfeeding, like nipple cream, gel pads, breastmilk storage containers and breast pumps. Having these items on your registry will share with others that you're committed to breastfeeding and will enable others to help support you after you have your baby. Be sure to bring breastfeeding support items in your hospital bag and to have them stashed around the house so you’ll have them wherever you are nursing!

Did you know?

According to UNICEF, babies who are breastfed have fewer illnesses and are better nourished than those who are fed other drinks and foods. If all babies were fed only breastmilk for the first six months of life, the lives of an estimated 1.5 million infants worldwide would be saved every year and the health and development of millions of others would be greatly improved.
